Custom Carbon Smoke and Odor Filter for Range Hood and Microwave — Made to Your Dimensions

The RCPS0-CUSTOM is a made-to-order activated carbon odor filter for ductless and recirculating range hoods and over-the-range microwave ovens. Carbon odor filters trap cooking smoke, airborne volatile organic compounds, and kitchen odors by passing recirculated air through an activated carbon media pad before returning it to the kitchen. Order this custom product when standard-size replacement carbon filters are no longer available for your range hood — whether due to a discontinued model, a retrofit installation, or a non-standard hood design.

Specify your exact dimensions at checkout: width, height (length), and depth. Every custom carbon filter is hand-built in the U.S.A. by American Metal Filter Company to your stated measurements, held to 1⁄16″ tolerance on width and height. Custom carbon filters are non-returnable — measure carefully and verify all dimensions before ordering.

Important limitation: We manufacture flat-frame carbon filters only. If your original filter had spring-loaded, sliding, or latch-lock tabs integrated into the frame, this product is not compatible — your range hood requires a mechanically different filter type that we cannot replicate.

Range Hood Filters Inc. is an independent manufacturer of aftermarket range hood filters since 1986. All brand names referenced are used for compatibility identification only.

Key Benefits — Custom Activated Carbon Range Hood Odor Filter

  • Removes Cooking Smoke and Odors: Activated carbon adsorbs VOCs, cooking smoke, and kitchen odors before recirculated air returns to the kitchen — restoring air quality without external venting.
  • Built to Your Exact Dimensions: Width and height are cut to the nearest 1⁄16″. Specify the depth that matches your range hood filter bay.
  • Solves Discontinued-Filter Problems: When the OEM carbon filter for your hood model is no longer manufactured, our custom program lets you continue operating your existing hardware without modification or replacement of the hood.
  • Flat-Frame Construction: Aluminum perimeter frame with flush-surface carbon pad. This is the correct geometry for the large majority of residential range hoods and microwaves.
  • Manufactured in the U.S.A.: Every custom carbon filter is built at our U.S. facility from activated carbon polysorb media and aluminum framing. No overseas production delays.
  • 40+ Years of Manufacturing Expertise: Range Hood Filters Inc. has manufactured and supplied range hood odor filters since 1986.

How to Measure for a Custom Carbon Odor Filter

Measure the width and height of your current filter or the opening in your range hood filter bay to the nearest 1⁄16″. Enter all dimensions as decimals rather than fractions — use the conversion table below. If you are working from the bay opening, subtract 1⁄16″ per side to allow for clearance when inserting and removing the filter.

Fraction Decimal Fraction Decimal
1⁄16″ 0.0625″ 9⁄16″ 0.5625″
1⁄8″ 0.125″ 5⁄8″ 0.625″
3⁄16″ 0.1875″ 11⁄16″ 0.6875″
1⁄4″ 0.25″ 3⁄4″ 0.75″
5⁄16″ 0.3125″ 13⁄16″ 0.8125″
3⁄8″ 0.375″ 7⁄8″ 0.875″
7⁄16″ 0.4375″ 15⁄16″ 0.9375″

Custom Carbon Odor Filter FAQ

Why won’t a carbon filter work in my ducted range hood?

Ducted (vented) range hoods draw kitchen air through grease filters and exhaust it outdoors through a duct — the air passes through once and exits the house. A carbon odor filter requires multiple air passes to adsorb cooking odors effectively. In a ducted application the single-pass exhaust removes odors by venting them outside; a carbon filter adds restriction but no meaningful odor benefit. Carbon filters are for recirculating (ductless) systems only.

Can I return a custom carbon filter if it doesn’t fit?

No. Custom-built filters are manufactured to your specified dimensions and cannot be restocked. Verify all measurements before placing your order. Contact our customer service team if you need help measuring or confirming your required dimensions before ordering.

How do I know when to replace the carbon filter?

Replace when you notice that cooking odors are no longer being absorbed — typically every 3–6 months at normal residential cooking frequency. Heavily used kitchens benefit from quarterly replacement; moderate home cooking generally allows 6-month intervals between replacements.
